While technology is essential, HEAP recognizes that people, not platforms drive impact. In Falaba District, limited digital literacy and data analysis skills previously constrained how health workers used routine data. Reports were submitted, but rarely analyzed or used for decision-making.

HEAP addressed this gap through targeted capacity-building initiatives focused on digital health literacy, DHIS2 analytics, and routine data quality improvement.

The Falaba District Health Management Team, and surrounding peripheral health units participated in hands-on training sessions designed to demystify data. Rather than focusing on theory, the trainings emphasized real-world application—how to interpret dashboards, identify inconsistencies, and use data to improve services.

“I used to think DHIS2 was only for reporting,” admits Sorie Bangura, Monitoring & Evaluation Officer, Falaba DHMT.“Now, I use dashboards every week to guide planning meetings and follow up on performance.”

District health staff in Falaba analyze DHIS2 dashboards during a routine review meeting, strengthening evidence-based planning.

The impact has been profound. Monthly review meetings now center on data trends rather than anecdotal observations. Supervisory visits are informed by performance gaps, and program managers can track progress over time.

Frontline workers also report increased confidence and ownership.

“When I see my data on the dashboard, I feel responsible,” says Mariatu Kamara, a Maternal and Child Health Aide.“It motivates me to report correctly and improve my work.”

By strengthening digital skills and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, HEAP is empowering Falaba’s health workforce to use data not just for reporting but for real change
